THE XX: MARKED MELANCHOLY!
During a hot summer sunday night in beautiful Montreal, United Kingdom trio The xx stopped by for a quick visit to a sold-out crowd at the Metropolis. People there were highly excited to hear this very humble performance for a straight ahead 70 minutes playing sixteeen songs.
The entire show contained six new songs from their upcoming second album “Coexist” available September 11th.
The xx haven’t lost their mystical, ghostly and half-shy way to perform on stage or on record, either. With five minutes or less songs, they powered their beat with Jamie Smith on percussion and programming combined with the voices of Oliver Sim (bass) and Romy Madley-Croft (guitar). The same interesting chemistry was obtained.
They opened with a new single, “Angels”, followed by their 3rd single “Islands”. This song was used by two major TV programs which is not bad for a band with only one album. The second new song (4th of the night) from their upcoming album was “Friction” featuring Oliver accappella during that one. The ballad song “Infinity” was delivered with a special light effect between lyrics during the chorus by Romy. The crowd was stunned by lyrics for a broken-hearted individual.
Two Other new songs “Reunion” and “Sunset” were played in a row. They were a perfect match. Both are very atmospheric, good for a cloudy day afor example! Their first single “Basic space” were played with a different energy. The encore were another new song named “Tides” which was followed by “Stars”. Unfortunetly, the much loved “Hot like Fire” wasn’t played. We can’t forget the fact that The xx has very strong mellow texture.
For some people , they are maybe repetitive with that moody, linear state of mind. They’re the type of band that are giving us results. They aren’t changing and trying to be cool for the industry. They are just keeping their winning recipe.
What is more important? You don’t have to be an electro music fan to enjoy what they are doing. Bass and guitar with distortion and chorus pedals are always appreciated.
They are coming to Quebec city, October 24th, if you missed it in “La Belle Province”.
