LIVE ‘N LOUD MEETS WINTERSLEEP
I met with Tim D’Eon, who plays both guitars and keyboards for Wintersleep, during the Osheaga Festival. The band has just released their new album, Hello Hum in June, and it’s been receiving top notch reviews. I met with Tim just after half the band played a short acoustic set where they were busking for War Child at the War Child tent in the Osheaga Village.
Erin: So welcome to Osheaga!
Tim: Thank you!
Erin: How are you enjoying your day here?
Tim: It’s been great so far, we’ve been busy since we got here though.
Erin: Are there any acts that you plan on catching while you’re here?
Tim: Well, Atlas Sound are playing right before we play on the same stage, so we’ll probably be able to check that out, maybe MGMT later, other than that I’m not sure because we leave for Nova Scotia at 7 in the morning.
Erin: Sounds like fun! So you guys are from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia?
Tim: Yeah, two of us are.
Erin: How did you find forming a band in a smaller area and getting your stuff noticed and such?
Tim: Well, me and Loel played music together throughout highschool, and we had another band before Wintersleep called Kary, and well we moved to Halifax, and that’s when Wintersleep started. So it was definitely easier being in Halifax, as opposed to starting in Yarmouth.
Erin: Awesome! You guys have been playing with some pretty huge acts over the past few years… Paul McCartney… Pearl Jam… That’s definitely an honor. How do you find it?
Tim: Yeah it was great! We’ve opened for Pearl Jam about three times now, those guys are always super nice, and bring a great crowd to play for. And McCartney was amazing… like we met him when we were setting up for a soundcheck and he just came over and tapped me on the shoulder, and was like “Nice to meet you! Thanks so much for playing!” and I was just like “Ahhhhhh….”! It was crazy!
Erin: Yeah, that must have been amazing…
Tim: It really was!
Erin: So you guys frequently collaborate with other musicians, is there anything you’re working on, on the side right now?
Tim: No, not really. I mean me and Loel are always going into our rehearsal space and messing around with ideas… it’s usually heavier stuff. It might turn into something someday. But yeah… John our keyboard player is putting out a solo record that I played a lot on. So did Loel, actually. And that will be coming out in August.
Erin: Cool! What makes you all keep coming back to Wintersleep?
Tim: I dunno! I guess it was our first main group and it’s always been our primary focus, so… I don’t really know. I guess that’s why!
Erin: Totally fair. I’m a pretty big fan, I’ve been listening to you guys for a while, I find that every album you put out kind of has a different sound and stuff. I love it. Do you take different approaches with different albums to create different sounds and styles?
Tim: Well, we always try and incorporate new kinda… especially on this new record, we incorporated a lot of synthesizers and weird kinda stuff that you wouldn’t normally record I guess.
Erin: Yeah, I definitely noticed that but I like it!
Tim: Yeah, we got to experiment a lot over this last record. Everytime we go into a studio, we all kind of explore and see what they have in the studio and try and do stuff with it.
Erin: That sounds like… so much fun!
Tim: Yeah for sure!
Erin: So tell us a bit more about your new album, Hello Hum. How do you feel about the finished product?
Tim: Really good! I actually just got the vinyl today finally. So I’m really excited about that as well. But yeah. The reviews that I’ve read so far have been pretty positive for the record, and everybody seems to be digging it, so yeah. We’re pretty stoked.
Erin: Well, that’s all the questions I have. Any final words of wisdom?
Tim: Not really… oh dear… Keep your stick on the ice!
Erin: Perfect! Thank you so much for meeting with us!
Tim: Thanks for listening!
