I’ve heard little of their music, and a whole lot about them. My Morning Jacket were in town at The Kool Haus on their Circuital tour. I was glad to take the opportunity to see what the Bonnaroo veterans have to offer. Getting started about 30min later than expected no one seemed to mind the wait. Beginning with some powerful extended songs, time was no longer a factor. Once everyone had settled in things quieted down through the first half of the set. That was until “The Way That He Sings” came out. A timely song that transitioned into the second half by slowly climbing into heavy crunching guitar riffs.

The second half saw much more of this style and energy. Once warmed up Jim James and crew couldn’t be stopped. A 20 song set that spanned just under two hours. Between one song he reminded everyone that they had some “stiff competition, U2 playing tonight”. With a little joke thrown to their manager; “…he really screwed us tonight, but you guys came through!” I’m pretty sure this crowd was happy with their surroundings.

After the set, everyone knew that there was an encore coming, and after a minute of constant cheers the band returned. This was no 2 song encore either. There were another 6 songs and nearly 45 more minutes. A total of 2 ½ hours of music, no wonder these guys don’t need a headliner.  Pretty sure a certain band at Roger’s Centre that night needed one.
