Houston’s House of Blues was packed on this night and the chatter of anticipation for Apocalyptica’s show to begin was creating such energy in the crowd…

The lights went down and backlights stayed on. Three imposing figures stepped from out of the shadows and took their place on stage. And so it began…

The lights went dark and opening the set was “On the Rooftop with Quasimodo”. It is a breathtakingly beautiful song. The venue had all but gone silent and motionless. It was unspoken and like a spell. All you needed to do was to just give yourself over to the music’s influence and over to the experience.

It was surreal really. The instrumental music Apocalyptica performs is taken to the next level. Damn near redefining what classic rock means. We expect a singer, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer. But, this band brings the unexpected. These natives of Finland have a drummer, three cellos and a vocalist (at times). They are musicians that are manly men bringing a fantasy angle to the music. Or maybe it’s me watching too many movies with romantic happy endings, I don’t know. But, I do know the guys in the audience had rock fists in the air and major smiles while the women were swooning to the beats with expressions of desire.

The “cellorock” band performed twenty songs and the excitement never faded – neither onstage nor off. Apocalyptica combined original music with Metallica covers. Did you know Apocalyptica began in 1993? And in 1996, their debut album was a Metallica tribute? They released half a dozen albums before the music charts began to notice and the rest is history. Remember the song “I Don’t Care” featuring Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace? Yes, you do. Want to see the video again? Click here!

Now, after cumulating 17 years of hard work, Apocalyptica just recently released their seventh CD titled “7th Symphony” (Jive Records). Their latest video is called “Not Strong Enough” featuring Doug Robb of Hoobastank. This unique band keeps getting better and better. The video is right up there!

The members of Apocalyptica are lead songwriter and cellist Eicca Toppinen, drummer Mikko Sirén, cellist Paavo Lötjönen, and cellist Perttu Kivilaakso. The band has been touring with vocalist Tipe Johnson.
