THE OFFSPRING: JUICE ON THE LOOSE
Cali punk rockers The Offspring have been on tour promoting their new album “Days Go By” which came out in June. With Nostalgia tours on the rise, the Offspring seemed to be enjoying playing their older catalogue. I was in attendance of the first of two Montreal concerts last Monday at the Metropolis. It was a fun show, but nostalgia alone wasn’t enough to keep up the momentum for the entire show. Some of the later cliché radio songs subdued the crowd a little, but their older songs from their first album really stood the test of time and the 30 something years of age crowd loved it.
The Offspring started at 9:50pm and finished around 11:15 with a total of 21 songs. They opened with two quick songs from their Ripchord days, “Hurting As One” and “All I Want”. The bouncers were working overtime to take care of the many crowd surfers, especially during “Come Out and Play” and “Gotta Get Away”, which didn’t seem to phase the band at all. However, a reggae inspired song named “OC Guns” lost the crowd, nobody seemed to know the song (maybe a band favorite, who knows?) but this one has a very bad chorus. The crowd went from fairly subdued during slower songs like “Days Go By”, “Gone Away” and “Kristy” and the major mainstream later songs “Why Don’t You Get A Job ?” and “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)” kept our attention here and there throughout the night.
Drummer Pete Parada was very into it and showing emotion behind the drums in contrast to singer Dexter Holland who looked a bit tired, maybe because of travelling since they were in Toronto the day before.
Noodles chatted a little bit and spoke about the reason they played 2 nights in a row because of the “stupid” election day. The encore were 3 good picks and they ended with crowd favourite “Self-Esteem”. Overall, it was a fun show, but not terribly memorable.
One of the two opening acts were Dead Sara, a four member band from Los Angeles with Emily Armstrong at vocals. They have a first single called “Weatherman”, but they are very reminiscent of L7.
