LAURA MARLING DOES ACOUSTIC AT THE SOUND ACADEMY
The very beautiful and musically gifted Laura Marling arrived back to Toronto. A quiet and sometimes shy soul, and avid reader, there is a certain nostalgia and timeless quality to her lyrics and music. To be referenced with talented singers as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Pj Harvey, and others, is no small feat for the twenty-two year old from Britain. She opened her set with a few songs from her previously released albums with a full band, but it wasn’t until she took the stage solo that one can appreciate the true emotional grit of her music. Her solo of ‘Night after Night” is breathtaking live and the Phoenix Concert Hall could not have sounded any more better on this night. She also stopped singing to provide an anecdote of getting lost on a unsuspected long walk down Queen Street unnoticed, only stumbling across a sea of teenage girls. She was unaware that the MMVAs were happening on this day, and Toronto was in the mist of Bieber fever. She has musically matured since releasing her debut album in 2008, Alas, I cannot Swim. A Creature I Don’t Know is her 3rd album and was released late 2011.
