BLACK LUNGS, MONEEN AND MOCKINGBIRD WISH ME LUCK AT BOVINE SEX CLUB
You’d be amiss to mistake Black Lungs for just another Alexisonfire side project. While Wade MacNeil’s project had it’s roots in the sort of softer fare that made co-guitarist Dallas Green immensely popular, it’s evolved into something entirely different. Evolving from singer-songwriter to all out punk project with a full band. Opening the night was Kitchener’s Mockingbird Wish Me Luck, and the surprise guest Moneen.
Mockingbird Wish Me Luck has been making a lot of waves lately, having opened for a number of notable bands around the area, and playing a genuine sort of punk rock you don’t hear much. They have admirable energy on stage and definitely got the crowd’s interest early on in the night.
Up next was Toronto favorites Moneen, they’d only been added to the bill the day before and most of the people at the venue didn’t even realize they were on the show. The band chose to take advantage of the surprise and actually opened their set by playing a few Nirvana and Green Day covers, neither of which singer Kenny Bridges actually knew the words to. After indulging in that they then switched over to playing only their older materials, which had the crowd moving in no time. Closing with fan favorite ‘Passing Of America.’
Finally closing out the night was Black Lungs. It’s been 4 years since I’ve seen Wade’s side project, and I can hardly believe how much they’ve grown since then. Taking the stage as a full punk band they launched into a set of furious punk songs. With all the members of the band bouncing around the stage and off the railings at the front. The crowd also started moving almost immediately and things got pretty chaotic really fast. It was however a testament to how much presence the band had, and how they know how to own a stage.
